Virtualization using (A)QEMU - Tun/Tap configuration

Written By James Ravenscroft

Over the last couple of years, I have used both VirtualBox and VMWare server under Linux, but have not been fully satisfied with either one. I have had problems with VirtualBox or a guest OS intermittently crashing and guest OS video display issues. VMWare’s web interface is cumbersome and problematic. Its web service dies inexplicably and I have found myself having to completely reinstall VMWare server after upgrading my kernel.

I decided recently to try AQEMU, a GUI front end to QEMU (and KVM) to set up a simple lab where I can load virtual machines and have them all be on the same network segment as the host machine. I quickly found that in order to do this, you need to enable bridging and then create virtual ethernet “tun/tap” interfaces for each of your guest OS to use. Unfortunately, this was not straightforward and required some searching and package installation/configuration. A synopsis of the steps using Ubuntu 10.4 is below.

1) Check to make sure all necessary packages are installed and install missing packages. The packages you need are AQEMU, bridge-utils and uml-utlilities. These can all be installed by issuing the following command in a terminal window (with a space between each of the package names) which will download and install all necessary packages:

$sudo apt-get install aqemu bridge-utils uml-utilities

2) Check for /dev/net/tun and if not present, load tun using

$sudo /sbin/modprobe tun

3) Add qemusers group and add your user account to the group (so that qemu will not run as root)

$sudo addgroup qemusers
$sudo adduser <user> qemusers

4) Edit /etc/rc.local to make /dev/net/tun usable for the qemusers group per bold text below. Ownership of tun reverts back to root when you reboot and this corrects ownership so that you will be able to use tun.  I like using the Gedit text editor:

$sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

==================

#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.

# Set permissions of tun device
chown root.qemusers /dev/net/tun
chmod g+rw /dev/net/tun

exit 0
==================

5) Edit /etc/network/interfaces to set up the bridge, create tap interfaces and join eth0 and all the tap interfaces to be used by your virtual machines to the bridge. An example of this is below; this creates and initializes 3 tap interfaces, a bridge (with static IP) and joins eth0 and tap0-2 to the bridge. The tunctl_user  listed should be a valid user that is also a member of the qemusers group (step 3 above). You will want to initialize as many tap interfaces as the maximum number of virtual machines that you will want to run at any given time. Alternatively, you could just include the information to set up the bridge (and add eth0 to it) only and create scripts to initialize tap interfaces and join them to the bridge as needed:

$sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces==================

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

auto tap0 tap1 tap2
iface tap0 inet manual
tunctl_user <user>
iface tap1 inet manual
tunctl_user <user>
iface tap2 inet manual
tunctl_user <user>

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
bridge_ports eth0 tap0 tap1 tap2
bridge_maxwait 0
address 192.168.1.60
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1

All that’s left is to reboot and configure your guests, which I’ll show in my next post. Have a safe and Happy New Year!

Apple Releases iTunes 10.1.1; Causes Crashes?

Yesterday, Apple updated iTunes to version 10.1.1 to address bugs and may have caused some in the process. There have been multiple reports of iTunes not launching after the update.  It is not clear if the affected users have made any modifications to iTunes such as the hacks to restore the color scheme and minimize buttons to their previous appearance. You may want to wait this update out for a few days until more information is available on this issue.

iTunes 10.1.1 is said to address the following issues:

  • Addresses an issue where some music videos may not play on Macs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 or 9600 graphics.

  • Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when deleting a playlist that has the iTunes Sidebar showing.

  • Fixes a problem where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when connecting an iPod to a Mac equipped with a PowerPC processor.

  • Addresses an issue where some music videos may not sync to an iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

Apple's Mac App Store Launches January 6th

Apple announced their controversial Mac App Store will go live January 6th. The new store is designed to give Mac users a "one stop shop" for all their Mac applications.  This is similar to Apple's iOS App Store with the exception users can still install software from other sources.  For their efforts, Apple is retaining 30% of all revenue from the store.

Adam's Edge: An In Depth Look At Running FreeNAS On An Acer EasyStore H340

Why FreeNAS?  Why not Windows Home Server?  I decided to use FreeNAS over WHS because I wanted something that was extremely light weight and did not have to be installed on any of my 4 storage drives.  FreeNAS is versatile in the sense that I can install it on a thumb drive, configure, backup the config, load FreeNAS onto another thumb drive, restore my saved config and I'm back online.  In the event that my host "drive" fails, I'll have my config backed up so I can easily load FreeNAS onto another usb media device, boot up, load my config and I am in business.  If I were using WHS loaded onto one of my storage drives, if that drive failed, I'd lose my OS as well as any data that is not redundant or backed up.

OS X Error 0 While Copying Files

If you receive an error 0 while copying files to an external hard drive in OS X, the issue is most likely due to the file format of the drive.  Most external hard drives are pre-formated as FAT32 which cannot handle files 4GB or larger.

CAUTION: Any data on the drive will be lost during this process. Remember to backup your data first!!!

To reformat the drive, launch Disk Utility and click on your external drive on the left hand side.  In the Format Tab, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and name the drive if you like. Now click erase and your drive will be ready.

Solved - Shuttle SN25P Gigabit NIC Issue

Ever since I bought my Shuttle SN25P computer years ago, I have not been successful with gigabit in Windows. Apparently nVidia has (or had) poor driver support in regards to it's nForce chipset.

Whenever I would attempt to utilize my gigabit connection to its full potential, I would immediately get notified by Windows that my network cable was unplugged. It would then reinitialize, and go out. This was identified as suspend/resume.

If I would switch to 10/100, I would have no problems. As soon as I connect a 1GBPS, any heavy network traffic would cause my NIC to flatline.

Last night I started researching this again, to see if maybe there were any breakthroughs or new drivers. I did find a driver from 2008. After updating the driver for the NVIDIA Network Bus Enumerator then NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, my gigabit connection was still having problems. I had remember reading to disable Checksum Offload through device manager. Upon doing so, I attempted to upload to my FreeNAS machine.

This was it! I had 0 problems and I was able to sustain 340 Mbps uploading with my NIC!

SO, if you have a Shuttle SN25P (or any other nForce chipset/NIC), try updating your drivers and disabling Checksum Offload. Maybe it'll bring you to the 21st century with reliable 1 Gbps speeds.

OS X Error -36 While Copying Files

If you receive error -36 while copying files from one hard drive to another, the source drive is probably going bad and should be replaced ASAP. I received this error while backing up my iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  For both libraries, I needed to backup chucks of the library until I found the corrupt files.

You can confirm hard drive issues by downloading Smart Utility of OS X.

No More Burning CDs

Do you have a stack of CD's that you use for OS installations and Boot Discs for diagnostics? You can get rid of them! With Pendrive Linux, you can turn your USB Flash Drive into a bootable CD carousel. Run the BootMyISO software, Create or download ISOs of your CDs, copy them to your drive, edit the menu.lst file and now you can boot up to your CDs wherever you go.

This is a great tool if your working on a machine without an optical drive. And you can access all of your favorite diag CDs with one flash drive.

TJ Maxx Selling 16GB iPad For $399

Engadget reports discount retailer TJ Maxx has begun selling Apple's 16GB WiFi iPad for $399, a $100 discount.  It is unclear how the retailer is able to sell the device so low.  There are multiple reports that TJ Maxx is selling the iPad at both its TJ Maxx and Marshall's stores.  If this item is on your holiday shopping list, you should try to get it soon as I don't expect these to last long!

Command Line Completion

A feature that most people probably don't know about is command line completion in DOS. If you still use cmd.exe in Windows, you can save a little time by hitting TAB to complete filenames and paths/folders.

This makes navigating and launching commands quicker. Give it a try. Open a command prompt, and simply hit TAB. It will scroll through the files/folders within the directory. You can also auto complete paths as you're typing them, not just files/folders in your current directory.

Command line completion also works with most command line interfaces: Unix/Linux shells, OS X Terminal, Cisco IOS, and more. Check out the Wikipedia page dedicated to command line completion.

Intel's Light Peak Coming Early 2011?

CNET reports that Intel's Light Peak technology is on track to appear in products during the first half of 2011. The current iteration of Light Peak delivers speeds of 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously.  This is faster than all current consumer input connections including  USB 3.0.  For me, this interface can't come soon enough!

Download All Of Your Facebook Data

Facebook has a new feature that allows users to download all of their photos and data from the social networking site.  To proceed, click on the Account drop-down menu in the upper right and select Account Settings.  In the Settings tab, look for Download Your Information and click learn more.  You will be able to request all of your data in a single download.  The request in not immediate, so Facebook will send you an email once the download is ready.

The only strange thing about the whole process is when you return to download your data.  You will need to correctly identify multiple sets of your friends tagged photos to verify you are actually "you".  This can be difficult if you have "friends" that you haven't met.  Some of the sets I was presented with, were friend's baby pictures and photos of the back of their heads.

Overall, this is a great new feature and Facebook deserves credit for allowing its users to download all of their photos, profile, and wall posts.

EU Rules Against Piracy Tax On Media Devices

ipodnn reports the European Court of Justice has ruled that EU countries cannot charge consumers levies on gadgets that play digital content.  This would apply to the iPod and other mp3 players, smartphones, printers and other electronic equipment.  The law was originally created to help compensate digital rights owners from people using blank media to pirate content.  It was quickly adopted to gadgets and assumed all users of the devices were pirating material.  The ruling still needs to be codified by the European Commission but we are keeping our fingers crossed for our friends in Europe!

TV Networks Blocking Web Content To Google TV

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that television networks ABC, CBS, and NBC are blocking content to Google TV.  The networks have content that is viewable on the web and some mobile devices, but they are reluctant to allow people to integrate the web content with traditional TV viewing.  The dispute centers around the network's ability to monetize their web content.  Currently, broadcast TV generates more revenue that web-based content, so the networks do not want to cannibalize broadcast TV viewers.

Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Player - Part 1

Digital Copy Room is pleased to have Mike Fielder give us his hands-on impressions of Sony's new Google TV Blu-ray player!

Hi! I'm Mike. I am a Tech Junkie.....

Logitech unveiled the Logitech Revue on October 6, and Sony unveiled their Google TV devices the following week. As a Tech junkie and a quiet fan of the Android platform, I couldn't wait to see how Google TV could enhance my home TV viewing experience. After a week of reading about both set top devices I was surprised to find out that the Sony Blu Ray player with Google TV embedded, was available for purchase from the Sony store in Annapolis! Off to Annapolis I GO!!!

I am now the owner of Sony’s Blu Ray/Google TV player. It comes with all the necessary hardware and connecting it to the TV is pretty straight forward.

Now, I  have an LCD TV with an HTPC connected to it so I'm familiar with using a small form factor keyboard. It takes some time to adjust to using a standard or small keyboard when surfing the net unless you have a level platform to rest the keyboard on. Sony addresses this small issue by creating a remote/keyboard in the form of their traditional gamepad controller. I initially had issues with this design, but after using it, I can only say that Sony has hit the mark! If you have used those mini keyboards for texting on slider phones, then you will be comfortable using this remote. It feels really natural in your hands and your thumbs are in perfect position for typing in search topics or URLs. I wish I could get a remote like this for my HTPC! The Sony remote has an optical mouse and Android function keys under your right thumb, and directional keys under your left thumb. Once your cable box and TV are programmed into the device, you can put those remotes into the drawer since they won't be needed much.

Now the buttons on the remote are grouped into three sections. The main keys for navigating through the Google TV interface, the Cable/Satellite box, and Digital TV are on the black portion of the remote.

In the middle of the remote is a row of color coded keys and your standard DVD control keys. Below this row is the qwerty keypad that will be used keying in your search topics and web URLs.

So far, my experience with Google TV has been very pleasant. I have added certain content to my queue and I am now able to view this material at the push of a button or two!! Looks like a great investment! Stay tuned!!

iLife 11 & MacBook Air Hinted On Apple's Discussion Forums

There are multiple reports that Apple prematurely added categories, for products being announced today, in their support forums.  The new categories represent the pieces of iLife '11 with a rumored new product labeled "Reserved 10 20".  It has been rumored that Apple will replace iDVD with a new product.  Since there is not a category reserved for iDVD '11, there is a good chance iDVD will be possibly replaced with a new digital publishing application.  One other category labeled "MBA (Need official name)"  may represent a re-branding of the MacBook Air line.

Digital Copy Room will have complete coverage of today's announcements.

Sony Unveils Their Google TV Lineup

Sony has unveiled their Google TV offerings dubbed "Sony Internet TV". Sony has two approaches delivering Google TV to consumers.  The first approach is the integrated experience with four sizes of TVs, 24", 32", 40", and 46".  The second approach is in a Blu-ray player with integrated Google TV.  This device may be a good fit for consumers wanting physical and streaming content.  Both the integrated TV and Blu-ray player come with an awful looking remote that reminds me of a Brother P-Touch labeler.  As with the Logitech unit, consumers may want to wait for more devices to come to market.

Suggested Retail Prices:

  • 24" Integrated TV $599

  • 32" Integrated TV $799

  • 40" Integrated TV $999

  • 46" Integrated TV $1399

Energizer Offers Powerpack Case For iPhone 4

Energizer now offers a powerpack case, the AP1201, for the iPhone 4.  The case nearly doubles the amount of battery life on the iPhone 4.  The AP1201 does not appear to add too much thickness to the device, however the bottom of the phone is extended.  From the gallery photos, it appears there is not a dock connector on the bottom of the case.  This may be an issue for users that need access to the port for regular syncing and accessories. The case is currently sold by BestBuy for $79.99 and other retailers are expected to stock the case soon.

New Apple TV Has Been Jailbroken

Mac Rumors reports the new Apple TV has been jailbroken.  While root access has been acquired, it may take a little more time until people find a way to get apps on the device.  I'm sure Apple will be very interested how people modify this device.  This would help Apple map out the product's future.

Nintendo's 3DS Will Not Be Released For Holiday Season

CNBC reports Nintendo is not releasing the 3DS, their 3D version of the popular hand-held gaming system, in time for this holiday season.  Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told analysts the company would not be able to supply enough units, if the 3DS was released this year.  As a result, Nintendo cut its full year profit by 1/3.

Devices like the iPod Touch and iPhone have been gaining gaming market share.  Consumers are attracted to the inexpensive cost of the games which typically range from free to $9.99.  For dedicated gaming devices such as the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP, it is rare to find a game for $9.99.  Most games will typically cost the consumer around $30.

With the 2010 holiday season a wash for Nintendo, will they be able to make up the ground in 2011 or will other devices continue to erode their market share?  If they can make the devices and games available to consumers for a lower cost, Nintendo may still be able to stay relevant in this market.  If they cannot reduce costs, they may go the way of the PDA.

US Digital Music Sales Flat For First Half Of 2010

Ruters reports digital music sales in the US were flat for the first half of 2010.  This is a dramatic change from the 28% increase in 2009.  The article points to weak consumer confidence and the quality of weak new releases as a possibility.

I believe one possible reason for this decline in momentum could be a generation gap.  There still are many consumers who have never owned an mp3 player.  Some consumers may never adopt digital music because there is still a subset of people that do not own a computer.  Other people do not understand the technology and the music industry needs to educate the public better on the benefits of this format.

Apple Releases iTunes 10.0.1 Update

Apple has released iTunes version 10.0.1.  The version number is a little strange considering the update actually changes some of the functionality of the software.  Apple has replaced the Genius Sidebar with a Ping Sidebar, so you can see updates from the handful of artists currently participating in the service.  One new feature includes the ability to "Like" songs within your iTunes library. As with any .0.1 release there are plenty of bug fixes.

Apple has published these specific fixes

• Addresses an issue where the picture quality of a video changes depending on whether the on-screen controls are visible.
• Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit while interacting with album artwork viewed in a separate window.
• Fixes a problem that affects the performance of some third-party visualizers.
• Addresses an issue where the iTunes library and playlists appear empty.
• Resolves an issue that created an incompatibility with some third-party shared libraries.

TV White Space Usage Green-Lighted For Wireless Connections

The FCC has approved the use of white space TV channels (the unused space between channels) for the use of wireless connectivity.  The white space frequencies do not require a FCC license to use.  Current WiFi technologies have a limited range and are impaired by objects such as walls.  The white space spectrum can have ranges measured in miles and can easily penetrate objects.  We may see some proof of concept products as soon as January at CES 2011.

Samsung Intercept Coming To Virgin Mobile

Netflix Streaming Coming To Canada?

The Hollywood Reporter claims that Netflix will announce access to their streaming service tomorrow.  This would be the company's first market outside the United States.  The rumor states there are no current plans for mail order DVDs.

Intel Upgrade Service Coming To Retail Stores

Intel may be changing the way they sell processors at retail.  Intel currently changes the clock speed and disables features on chips during the manufacturing process. The BBC is reporting Intel is piloting a new program that gives consumers the opportunity to upgrade the processor's cache and hyperthreading through the purchase of an upgrade "gift" card. The cards will run the consumer approximately $50 and will grant access to a Windows based firmware upgrade located here.

Is this a good marketing campaign for Intel?  There have been mixed reactions.  Some consumers like it because it provides a chance to cheaply upgrade their PC in the future. The purchaser may not have enough money to get the better processor at purchase, but could buy an upgrade card down the road.  Other consumers are upset because the processors are being purposely hobbled and will not run as originally designed.  Hackers are excited at the potential of unlocking the processors without paying the upgrade fee. Finally, retailers may be able to carry a larger selection of PCs utilizing this program.  Only time will tell, but it should be interesting!

Warner Bros. Thinks 99 Cents Is Not Enough To Charge For TV Show Rentals

The AP reports Warner Bros. Chief Executive Barry Meyer said Warner Bros. did not participate in Apple's plan to offer 99 cent TV show rentals because the price was too low and it would of hurt sales of full seasons.  Apparently, these comments are based on the $2.99 price per episode the studio currently receives for DRM'ed purchases.

Now I try to leave editorials off the news page and save them for the editorial section and The DCR Report podcast, but this is another example of greedy content holders that have no clue how to adapt to the market.  I think 99 cents is too much to pay to rent a show that is broadcasted over the air for free.  It might be a good deal for shows like HBO's True Blood, so fans do not need to subscribe to both a TV service provider and HBO. Additionally, $2.99 to buy heavily DRM'ed episodes that is tied to a handful of devices is robbery.

What is the alternative to these overpriced or non existed rentals?  Some people may say bittorrent.  Others believe viewers will find alternative forms of entertainment.  Video games and original web content have been eroding legacy television viewers for at least the last decade.

The game is content providers to lose. Will they let other networks take their viewers or will viewers migrate to different forms of entertainment.  Only time will tell, but if history is any indication the networks need to adapt or die.

Apple In Negotiations With Publishers To Launch A Digital Newsstand

Bloomberg reports Apple is in talks with publishers to create a digital newsstand.  The newsstand will be separate from Apple's iBooks and App Stores.  This new store will allow users to subscribe to magazines and newspapers instead of buying 1 issue at a time on the App Store.  Publishers rumored to be in talks with Apple include Time Warner Inc., Conde Nast, Hearst Corp, and News Corp.  Details are still being negotiated, but revenue splitting is probably the biggest topic.

Notebook Growth Turns Negative

Microsoft Holds Windows 7 Parade / iPhone & Blackberry Funeral

neowin.net reports Microsoft celebrated the RTM version of Windows Phone 7 by holding a funeral parade for the iPhone and Blackberry.  The funeral took place on Microsoft's Redmond campus with the Windows Phone 7 team claiming the new operating system will bury the competition.

Interestingly, there was no mention of Google Android at this event.  Does Microsoft see Android as insignificate and not a credible competitor?  The real answer is Microsoft is probably afraid to poke the soon to be top dog of smart phones.  Since their OS has not shipped yet, why not make fun of the future 2nd and 3rd place phones first!

Google Introduces Google Instant Search

Google has launched Google Instant, a new predictive search feature.  Google Instant displays your search results without needing to press enter or click search.  The feature also updates the results as you type, so Google is exponentially increasing the number of searches it serves per day.  This is definitely a cool new feature and the company believes it will save users 2-5 seconds per search.

Mac4Ever reports (via MacRumors)  the app is currently awaiting approval from Apple's App Store.  The desktop version of VLC is the Swiss Army Knife of media players; if you have a video file, there is very good chance that VLC can play it.  While you may be willing to pay for VLC, you don't have to.  If approved, VLC for the iPad will be free!

Restore The Window Control Buttons In iTunes 10

For some reason (most likely a preview for Mac OS X 10.7), Apple decided to move the window control buttons on the OS X version of iTunes 10 to a vertical orientation.

To change the buttons to a horizontal position, run the below command in the Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -1

To change the orientation back, change the value -1 to 0.

Apple Discount For Comcast Employess

This was one of the most popular posts on the old DCR forums.  This has been left as an entry for archival purposes.

Tech Forums > Comcast Employees get a discount at Apple Stores..

I went shopping at the Apple store at Christiana Mall the other day to get an eyetv. After a few minutes of conversation I was told that Apple offers a discount to Comcast employees. The discount varies depending on what you are purchasing. When the imac I purchased was 'rerang' the discount was enough to get an airport extreme and still have $27 left over. Just make sure that you have your badge on you for verification of employment.

Hope this helps someone...

Apple Releases iTunes 10

Courtesy of Apple

Apple has released iTunes 10.  iTunes 10 adds TV show rentals, improved syncing, support for the new Apple TV and iTunes Ping.  iTunes Ping is Apple's new social media component that allows users to follow their favorite artists and friends.

Unfortunately, Apple still has not given users wireless syncing.  Additionally, if your iOS device is jailbroken, do not upgrade to iTunes 10 until the jailbreak community sounds the "all clear".

Apple Announces New Apple TV

Courtesy of Apple

As rumored, Apple announced a new version of the Apple TV.  The new player is about a fourth of the size as the previous version.  Apple chose to replace the Intel processor in the old version with an Apple A4 chip.  Internal storage has been removed from the device in favor of streaming media from the Internet, computer, or iOS device via AirPlay.  AirPlay will allow you to stream your content directly to the Apple TV from an iOS device.

While I am happy that Apple finally updated their "hobby" media device, other devices such as the WDTV Live provide more features for the price including the ability to connect external hard drives via USB and support for a large amount of video codecs.  If this device is for you, it is available to preorder now and will ship in approximately 4 weeks.

Specs:

  • 0.9" x 3.9"

  • 0.6 lbs

  • Apple A4 processor

  • 802.11 b/g/n

  • 10/100 ethernet

  • Netflix & Youtube streaming

  • Streaming from Mac or PC

  • HDMI

  • Optical audio

  • Micro USB port (service & support only)

  • AirPlay

  • $99US

Apple Updates All Current iPod Models

Today, Apple updated their lineup of iPods.  The iPod Shuffle was given its buttons back, the iPod nano lost its click wheel & camera, and the iPod Touch gained cameras for video and FaceTime calls.

  • 4.4" x 2.3"

  • 3.56 oz

  • 3.5" display @ 960 x 640 resolution, 326ppi

  • Three-axis gyro sensor added

  • Up to 40 hours of audio & 7 hours of video playback on a single charge

  • 8GB - $229US, 32GB - $299US, 64GB - $399US

iPod nano Specs:

  • 1.48" x 1.61"

  • .74 oz

  • 1.54" touch screen

  • Built in clip

  • FM Radio

  • Nike +

  • Up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge

  • 8GB - $149US    16GB -  $179US

iPod Shuffle Specs:

  • 1.14" x 1.24"

  • .44 oz

  • Control buttons are back!

  • Built in clip

  • VoiceOver

  • Playlist support

  • Up to 15 hours of playback on a single charge

  • Available in 5 colors

  • 2GB - $49US

The iPod Classic was not mentioned today.  Since Steve Jobs said Apple was updating all of their iPods today, this model may be on its way out.  The only thing I found disappointing today was the lack of increased storage.  It has been at least 2 years since there has been any increase in storage capacity on iPod models.

USA Today Restructuring; Shifting Focus To Digital Distribution

The Associated Press reports newspaper USA Today will be restructured to focus more on digital devices like the iPad and less on physical print.

"We have to go where the audience is," Hillkirk (John Hillkirk, USA Today Editor) said. "If people are hitting the iPad like crazy, or the iPhone or other mobile devices, we've got to be there with the content they want, when they want it."

The changes will result in the loss of 9% of USA Today's current staff, approximately 130 jobs. It will be interesting to see if this newspaper can successfully migrate its business to digital distribution.  If they are successful, others should start to follow quickly.

Rumor: Apple's New iPod Nano To A Have Major Redesign?

Image via AppleInsider

Rumors have been swirling around the Internet about the design of the iPod nano. AppleInsider published a story stating the new nano will resemble an iPod shuffle instead of a nano.  They believe the nano will loose its click wheel and the screen will be replaced with a 3cm x 3cm touch screen.  This is the same screen that appeared earlier this year and every rumor site has been trying to find product for it to go in (the previous rumor was a new remote for the AppleTV).

We'll see if this rumor is true this Wednesday, September 1st at Apple's media event.  I'm not sure how usable this form factor would be.  Keep checking Digital Copy Room for more updates.

Apple Updates Pages To Add ePub Export Feature

In a surprise move, Apple updated the current version of Pages, Apple's word processing program, to include ePub export. ePub is the format Apple uses for its iBooks application, on iOS devices such as the iPad. Pages has supported PDF document export, so with the addition of ePub, Pages becomes an increasingly important document creation tool.

Many tech sites are speculating that Apple will release the next version of its iLife and iWork software packages and this update takes some of steam out of those rumors.

MPEG LA Makes H.264 Royalty Free For End Users

In a move that should help HTML 5 adaption, MPEG LA has decided to allow H.264 video playback to be royalty free.  H.264 is one of the proposed specs for HTML 5 video for streaming online content.  Unfortunately, for-profit content providers will still need to pay licensing fees to use this technology.

Apple May Start To Detect Unauthorized iOS Devices

MacRumors reports Apple has been granted a new patent (application # 20100207721) for detecting unauthorized users of electronic devices.  The patent is generating controversy about how Apple plans to use the technology, if they decide to do so. I believe Apple may already be using this idea with the find my iPhone feature.  Through Apple's MobileMe service, users can locate lost iPhones via GPS & WiFi data.  Additionally, users can permanently lock their phones, so their data cannot be stolen.

There is some fear that Apple may use the technology to disable jailbroken devices.  It may not be in Apple's best interest to do this.  How else will Apple continue to add features users want without being able to "borrow" them from the jailbreak community.

One of the more scary ideas about this patent is the spy camera function.  If the device's location is trying to be determined and all available data is being gathered, there are some privacy concerns about the photos that may be taken with the built in camera.  Hopefully, malware authors do not find a way to activate this system and start taking photos of users in all kinds of situations.

At this time, there is no need to panic.  There should be discussions held about how Apple and other vendors intend to implement this type of technology.  There should be limits set to ensure consumer's privacy is not compromised in an effort to "protect them".

If you are thinking about selling or disposing your old hard drives and computers, you need to make sure data cannot be retrieved from the drives.  Darik's Boot and Nuke is a great free resource for this.  Download the file and create a bootable CD and nuke those drives. Just be careful to select the correct drive!

Convert Your Movies To Play On iPad & iPhone

Converting your favorite movie to play on your iOS device is easy.  The biggest hurdle in the process is the time it takes to convert the video to the correct format.  iOS plays H.264 mp4 videos using the m4v extention.

There are 2 free software programs required to convert your videos and both programs are available for OS X, Windows, and Linux!  Although you need to install 2 programs, the only program you need to launch is Handbrake.  Handbrake handles all the video encoding, but it can also decrypt your videos using VLC.

Encoding your videos:

  • Install VLC and Handbrake

  • Launch Handbrake

  • Select video source (dvd or already ripped video files)

  • Select your preset- In Handbrake 0.94, I found AppleTV Legacy works on my iPod Touch, iPad, computer, and WDTV)

  • Sit back and relax, it may take a while.  Encoding a 2hr movie on my Core Duo iMac takes about 2hrs.  Newer computer are much faster but there is still plenty of room for speed improvements.

One nice feature of Handbrake is its ability to queue video encodings.  To do this, you will need to have your video source files ripped ahead of time.  You can use any program you like.  For Mac OS X, my favorite program is RipIt

Now just import your encoded video into iTunes.  If you want, you can right click on the file in iTunes and select properties or Get Info (depending on your operating system) and click on the Artwork tab.  In this tab, you can paste your favorite movie poster or DVD cover into the file.

Sync your device and your all done.  Enjoy your movie anywhere you want!
