Ruters reports digital music sales in the US were flat for the first half of 2010. This is a dramatic change from the 28% increase in 2009. The article points to weak consumer confidence and the quality of weak new releases as a possibility.
I believe one possible reason for this decline in momentum could be a generation gap. There still are many consumers who have never owned an mp3 player. Some consumers may never adopt digital music because there is still a subset of people that do not own a computer. Other people do not understand the technology and the music industry needs to educate the public better on the benefits of this format.
